The school was built by L N W R Company in 1902 and was enlarged in 1911. It was originally mixed and infants with with about 1,120 pupils. A joint committee of Crewe day school managers administered it from 1902. In 1958 Kingsway Secondary School for Girls was opened as the successor to Bedford Street Girls' School
